It’s the best and it can save you a fortune – a real asset in these thrifty times. So if you’ve got time and a packet of sugar, salt, oatmeal, etc. lurking in the back of your cupboard – why not give one of these thrifty recipes a go:

Sugar Scrubs

You will need:
- Sugar – White or brown
- Virgin Olive oil
- Honey
- Lemon juice

Combine about ½ cup of granulated white or brown sugar, 2 tbsp honey, 3 tbsp Lemon juice and 2 or 3 tbsp of oil to make a thick paste. If the mixture is too runny, add more sugar.
Salt Scrubs
Salt is an excellent exfoliant. Any type of salt will work, including ordinary table salt, Epsom salts, or sea salt, which also contains minerals that are nourishing to the skin.

Ground Nuts or Grains
- Different types of nuts or grains such as almonds, cornmeal or oatmeal can be used as exfoliants. Oatmeal is known for its soothing effect on skin. Whole oats and nuts can be ground in a blender or coffee grinder. To make a scrub, combine a few tablespoons of ground nuts or grains with honey, mayonnaise, milk, lemon juice, or oil to make a thick paste.
- Note that while adding oil to exfoliating scrubs is moisturizing for the skin, if the scrub is being used as a body wash in the shower the oil can create a safety risk by making the bottom of the shower very slippery. So be very careful!
Why the need to exfoliate?
- Exfoliation helps to increase blood circulation along with the removing of dead skin and dirt, keeping your skin cleaner and healthier. Skin exfoliation can be done once in a fortnight. There are many commercial scrubs available, but exfoliating scrub that’s homemade is more invigorating and leaves the skin rosy, clean and healthy.
How often exfoliation is recommended?
- It depends on a number of factors, including what you exfoliate with, your skin type, and your general skin health. I’d say exfoliating scrubs are meant to be used weekly or as needed to rejuvenate facial and body skin.
- If you have oily skin, you can generally exfoliate two to three days a week without any ill effects. Obviously, you should skip the exfoliation if your skin feels dry or irritated, or if it looks red and flaky. People with more dry, delicate skin should exfoliate one to two times a week, ideally with a gentle exfoliating scrub which will not irritate your skin.
- If you’re not sure about whether or not you can exfoliate with a particular facial scrub or product, test it on your inner elbow, where the skin is especially tender. If the scrub causes irritation, it indicates that it may not be a good choice. If no irritation is experienced, you can safely use that facial scrub to exfoliate on a regular basis.Regular exfoliation can create glowing, smooth skin, but if you exfoliate too much, your skin can be damaged.
- When you exfoliate, less is more. Use only a small amount of exfoliant and take the time to really scour your skin; if you take a large dollop, the exfoliant will grind against itself more than your skin, and you will not receive any benefit. After exfoliating, always apply a layer of moisturizer to keep your skin healthy, supple, and moist.
- Remember that your skin health also plays a factor in how often you should exfoliate. If you suffer from eczema or other skin conditions, you may want to ease back on your exfoliation schedule, especially if your doctor recommends the use of gentle skin care products only. If you’ve recently been sunburned, you should also avoid exfoliating until the sunburn starts to peel, because you don’t want to pull new skin off while it is trying to heal.
- Okay that’s it, I hope this article will help you save money and makes your skin fresh, clean and smooth. Good luck and God bless!
